A “Weed Wrangle” is an event that bring volunteers together to remove invasive plants that are negatively impacting our public spaces. During these events, community members learn to identify and control invasive plants which are causing harm to our native plant communities. By engaging our community members, we foster a collective effort to have a substantial positive impact for our native plants, pollinators, birds, and other wildlife.

During a Weed Wrangle Indiana® you will not only learn about plants, wildlife and how to manage invasive plants, but will also join a national effort to positively impact our communities. Head Gardener Wanted – Help Grow Something Special!

We’re looking for an experienced and passionate Head Gardener to maintain our gardens and help inspire a love of nature in children.

What You’ll Do with the help of our Staff:

Foundation for Youth is for a volunteers who love the outdoors to spend time with a group of kids this summer and help them learn, grow, and get their hands a little dirty in the best way possible!

What you might do:

Lead nature walks, outdoor games, or exploration activities

Teach basic skills like plant identification, ecology, or conservation

Help kids build confidence and curiosity in an outdoor setting

Encourage teamwork, creativity, and respect for the environment

Teach basic gardening skills, share knowledge about plants and nature

Create a fun, engaging outdoor experience.

We have a garden that can also be a main focus for a passionate volunteer. Activities might include planting flowers and vegetables, maintaining the garden, showing kids how things grow from seed to harvest, teaching about pollinators, and anything else the kids could learn about.

Make a Splash by Helping Scrub Our Pool Deck

Foundation for Youth is for volunteers to scrub and clean our pool deck to get it looking fresh and safe for everyone to enjoy. Over time, the deck has built up some grime, and a good deep scrub will make a big difference!

What the task involves:

Skill level: No experience needed—just a willingness to help and get a little wet!

Weed It & Reap! Volunteer Day at Camp!

Our beautiful camp is looking a little too wild these days — and we need some awesome humans to help us show those weeds who’s boss!

Join us for Weed Pulling at camp and help us get the grounds looking fresh, fabulous, and ready for adventure. No experience required — if you can grab, pull, and toss, you’re fully qualified!

Every Thursday morning we pre-package groceries for up to 100 families at the food pantry warehouse. These groceries are later distributed at our Mobile Outreach Pantries, which are held in the outlying areas of the county.

These drive-thru pantries offer much-needed nourishment to our food-insecure neighbors, especially those facing transportation and other barriers. Love Chapel is seeking volunteers to help pack food in grocery bags each Thursday for these distribution sites.

Foundation for Youth is seeking volunteer coaches to help lead and inspire our youth athletics programs!

We are looking for enthusiastic volunteers to help support our youth and adult sports programs. If you have experience, knowledge, or simply a love for the game, we’d love to have you on our team! Volunteers help create a positive, encouraging environment where players can grow, learn, and have fun. Opportunities are available with our K–2 Basketball League, 3–12 Basketball League, K–12 Volleyball League, Payne Stewart Golf Experience (Grades K–4 Division), and Adult Basketball League. Volunteers must be available for one hour, twice a week and have experience or knowledge of the sport; a passion for mentoring and supporting players is a plus. Training is provided!

If you love sports, enjoy working with kids, or just want to give back to the community, we’d love to have you on our team. You don’t need to be a former pro—just bring a positive attitude, patience, and a willingness to encourage young athletes as they learn skills, teamwork, and confidence. Cat Socialization Volunteers play a vital role in helping cats adjust to the shelter environment and prepare for adoption. Through calm, gentle interaction, volunteers help build trust and confidence in each cat.

By spending quiet time, offering treats, brushing, and engaging in soft play, volunteers reduce stress and support the cats’ emotional well-being, helping them feel safe, comfortable, and ready for their forever homes.

Doggie Day Out is a fun adventure program where a shelter pup gets to enjoy play, exercise, and social time in a safe, outdoor setting. General Cleaning involves helping keep the shelter clean and comfortable for both animals and visitors. Tasks may include cleaning dog or cat kennels, sweeping and mopping the lobby, tidying bathrooms, breakrooms, and office areas, or maintaining the community room. Our shelter does tons of laundry every day—towels, blankets, and sheets used for cleaning and bedding. Some items can be pretty dirty, so it’s not for the squeamish! Clean laundry keeps our animals comfortable and healthy. Volunteers are welcome to help on-site or pick up loads to wash at home—and while the machines run, there’s often time for a few cat or dog snuggles! Walking shelter dogs is different from walking a family pet. Some may not be used to leashes, react to other dogs, or pull with excitement. Our Lead Dog Walking Volunteers help with training and scheduling. The goal is to give each dog outdoor time, build leash skills, watch their behavior, and practice good manners. The Walk to End Alzheimer’s Executive Leadership Team members are volunteer leaders who serve under the direction of the Executive Event Chair and work in conjunction with a staff lead to ensure success of the Walk to End Alzheimer’s. Utopia Wildlife Rehabilitators is a licensed wildlife rehabilitation facility in Hope In. We are in need of animal care volunteers who can commit to a weekly shift to help at our hospital. You will be on the front lines of animal care with all of the attendant cleaning involved. This isn't the opportunity for you if you can't handle cleaning up feces or helping bandage wounds. Volunteers work with all native Indiana wildlife that come into our facility, as well as attending to the daily needs of our ambassador animals.

The BCPL Express is the "Free Book" program of the Bartholomew County Public Library, which distributes books to low income neighborhoods, parks, preschools, daycares, food pantries and more. The Book Express relies upon donated books for distribution.

McDowell Education Center is seeking volunteer to help English learners improve their reading and literacy levels.

At McDowell Education Center, we offer free English learning classes. The end goal for our English learners is to learn how to read, write, and communicate in English. Volunteers would choose their preference to come into one of our English classes in the AM anytime from 9-12 or PM classes anytime from 5-8.

Volunteers would help with having conversations with a student- helping them build their confidence in speaking, help with reading/writing, and participate in fun in-class activities.

The Columbus Symphony Orchestra is a nonprofit managed by a volunteer board of directors. The CSO board currently has vacancies and is looking for community members who are interested in helping to organize and manage the orchestra's administrative responsibilities. No musical experience is required. The board meets monthly on the first Wednesday of the month at 5:45pm via Zoom. The Columbus Symphony Orchestra is currently seeking volunteer musicians to join our ensemble! We are especially in need of the following instruments: violin, viola, cello, bass, oboe, english horn, bassoon, french horn, harp, and percussion. Pianists who have an interest in playing with an orchestra can also contact us and we would love to have them join us when we perform music that requires a piano part. We do not require auditions or membership fees for musicians to come and play with us.

We meet for rehearsal most Tuesday evenings from 7-9pm in the band room at Central Middle School (enter through Door 6) and perform five concerts per season (October through June). Rehearsals begin in late August/ early September and end in early June. There is a break during the summer months and in December between our annual Holiday Concert and the New Year holiday. 

The CSO is a volunteer-run non-profit community orchestra whose musicians range from intermediate to advanced in skill. Our musicians range from high school students to retirees. The CSO is a full orchestra, which means we have strings, winds, brass, and percussion who play with us. We perform classical and pops music. Some examples of composers we've played this past season include: George Gershwin, Duke Ellington, Dame Ethel Smyth, Scott Joplin, Samuel Coleridge-Taylor, Johannes Brahms, Igor Stravinksy, W.A. Mozart, and Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky.

Maumee Scout Reservation is located in the middle of the Hoosier National Forest in the northwest corner of Jackson County. Maumee is a rural retreat with limited access to the internet which requires our campers to "unplug" throughout their stay. Maumee provides an outdoor classroom which affords youth the opportunity to get back to being a kid again and enjoying the wonders of nature, all while learning the principles of Scouting.

There are always projects to be completed to keep this 640 acre property meeting the needs of today's campers. Project vary by season and the abilities of our volunteers.

Now in its 5th year, 411 Gallery is growing in popularity and engaging a broad audience. To continue this growth, the Columbus Area Arts Council is expanding the gallery hours to include early evenings and weekends.
