Opportunities From: United Way of Bartholomew County Volunteer Site

Volunteers are needed to assist in distribution of food during our Christmas Feast Giveaway.

The holidays can be a tough time of year, especially for those struggling with food or financial security. Every year, Love Chapel helps our neighbors to celebrate the holidays without worry by providing everything they need for a Christmas Feast. The baskets include enough food for breakfast, lunch, and Christmas dinner, along with ingredients for baking and holiday treats! Clients must be residents of Bartholomew County, limit one per household. Clients can receive a Christmas basket in addition to their regular pantry visit.

Help Bring Holiday Joy to Local Children

The United Way of Bartholomew County is seeking enthusiastic volunteers to support children in our community this holiday season. Volunteers will assist with phone calls and use an online registration system to help families sign up for gift assistance through programs such as Christmas with Veterans, Community Center of Hope Angel Tree, Firemen’s Cheer Fund, Shop With A Cop, St. Bartholomew Giving Tree, and Toys for Tots.

What’s needed:

Basic office and computer skills

A willingness to learn (training will be provided at the start of your first shift)

Completion of a background check (a consent form will be emailed after you sign up)

Volunteer Details:
October 6 – December 5
Shifts available Monday–Friday: 9:30 am-12:30 pm or 1–4 pm
Commit to one shift or as many as you’d like—every hour helps!

Be a part of the crew helping to setup this year's Walk to End Alzheimer's in Columbus at Mill Race Park Amphitheater. Volunteers are responsible for numerous activities including moving tables and chair, assembling signage and placing along the route, putting up tents, moving cases of bottled water and refreshments. 

Be a part of the crew that helps tear down and pack from the Walk to End Alzheimer's in Columbus at Mill Race Park Amphitheater. Volunteers are responsible for taking down and packing tents, folding up tables and chairs and moving to location for transport, collecting signage from the route, moving items to location of van for packing, and various duties as assigned to facilitate the tear down and departure from the event. 

During a Weed Wrangle, you will not only learn about plants, wildlife, and how to manage invasive plants, but you will also join a national effort to positively impact our communities.  And it's FUN!!!  Each event is a rewarding opportunity to work together locally to celebrate and protect our cherished green spaces and natural areas!

Weed Wrangles are volunteer events hosted nationwide to control the invasive plants that are negatively impacting our public spaces.  During these events, community members learn to identify and control invasive plants that are causing harm to our native plant communities.  By engaging our community members, we foster a collective effort to have a substantial positive impact for our native plants, pollinators, birds, and other wildlife.

Come join the Columbus Scottish Festival planning committee in the final push for Festival set up! The Columbus Scottish Festival is a 32 year tradition that started in by East High School and made it's way to the Bartholomew County 4-H Fairgrounds. 

The Festival planning committee is a strong group of volunteers but needs your help to get the Festival set up over the finish line! As a setup volunteer, you may be stringing bunting to create our Heavy Athletic fields or helping move bleachers into position under tents or folding the Festival brochures! Assist with general camp cleanup and grounds maintenance

Use hand tools, chainsaws, or even heavy equipment if you have it available (optional)

Remove raised garden beds for relocation to the compost bin area.

Complete the wood framing around the veggie wash table.

Help Advocates for Children spread the word! We are looking for volunteers to assist with distributing brochures to local businesses in town. Volunteers will be provided with a list of potential locations and a supply of brochures. At each business, volunteers will ask for permission to leave materials and then place brochures in an appropriate spot if approved.

Volunteers must be willing and able to drive from location to location. If you prefer not to go alone, you are welcome to team up with another volunteer for the day.

This is a great opportunity for those who enjoy being out in the community and connecting with local businesses while helping us raise awareness!

Columbus Fellowship Club is in need of volunteers to help with grounds cleanup:  clearing weeds and brush overgrowth from parking lots, tree limb and bush trimming, and gutter cleaning.

Sorting & Cleaning: Sort, count, and clean items; discard anything old or damaged.

Organization: Place cleaned, usable items into labeled cabinets throughout the building.

Office Area Refresh: Clean a small office (sweep, mop, wipe down walls) and move in an L-shaped desk.

Wash the HSI sign in front of our building (only outdoor task).

Spackle small wall holes.

We are especially looking for volunteers with experience or skills in audio/visual setup, electrical work, or general installation. If you’ve worked with sound systems, wiring, or similar projects, your expertise will be a huge help in ensuring this project’s success.

Love Chapel is looking for compassionate and reliable volunteers to serve as Telephone Desk Receptionists during the hours of 9:00 AM – 12:00 PM one or two days per week, or another schedule that works best for you.

This is a front-line role that directly supports those in crisis, offering hope and guidance when it’s needed most. Your time and heart can make a difference.

Join us every Thursday morning as we pre-package groceries for up to 100 families at the food pantry warehouse. These groceries are later distributed at our Mobile Outreach Pantries, which are held in the outlying areas of the county. These drive-thru pantries offer much-needed nourishment to our food-insecure neighbors, especially those facing transportation and other barriers. Love Chapel is seeking volunteers to help pack food in grocery bags each Thursday for these distribution sites.

Join us for this years Columbus IN Pride festival to help celebrate all things LGBTQ+!

We seek volunteers for the day of the event. You can volunteer for specific shifts or for the entire day, which can range from about 2-10 hours depending on your availability. We welcome volunteers of all ages, but volunteers under age 18 will need parent/guardian perimission and volunteers under age 14 will need a parent or guardian present.

The event itself is from 12-6 PM. We will need volunteers from 7:30 AM to 7 PM. 

Volunteer shifts may include: set-up (this may involve some degree of lifting, but not more than you personally can tolerate), parking monitoring, clean-up and trash removal, helping in the Kids Zone, and tear-down.

All volunteers will receive a free volunteer T-shirt to be easily identifiable as well as a swag bag!

We do ask that you update us if you sign up to volunteer but then can no longer attend as we depend on our volunteers. 

The Columbus, IN Pride Festival is a celebration of unity and individualism. Our festival works to unite Columbus as one community that celebrates diversity, fosters inclusion for all and embraces the LGBTQ+ community. In particular this year, we seek to protect pride and promote unity by bringing together members of the LGBT community, allies and community organizational leaders. We hope to advocate for positive conversation about the values and experiences we share while celebrating what makes us different.

Utopia Wildlife Rehabilitators is a licensed wildlife rehabilitation facility in Hope In. We are in need of animal care volunteers who can commit to a weekly shift to help at our hospital. You will be on the front lines of animal care with all of the attendant cleaning involved. This isn't the opportunity for you if you can't handle cleaning up feces or helping bandage wounds. Volunteers work with all native Indiana wildlife that come into our facility, as well as attending to the daily needs of our ambassador animals.

McDowell Education Center is seeking volunteer to help English learners improve their reading and literacy levels.

At McDowell Education Center, we offer free English learning classes. The end goal for our English learners is to learn how to read, write, and communicate in English. Volunteers would choose their preference to come into one of our English classes in the AM anytime from 9-12 or PM classes anytime from 5-8.

Volunteers would help with having conversations with a student- helping them build their confidence in speaking, help with reading/writing, and participate in fun in-class activities.

The Columbus Symphony Orchestra is a nonprofit managed by a volunteer board of directors. The CSO board currently has vacancies and is looking for community members who are interested in helping to organize and manage the orchestra's administrative responsibilities. No musical experience is required. The board meets monthly on the first Wednesday of the month at 5:45pm via Zoom. We try to make sure each dog gets out at least daily for some kind of outdoor enrichment. Sometimes that means helping them learn and other times it's just for them to enjoy sniffing and fresh air!  This activity is really important for our dogs that our housebroken!

Our Walkers come every day of the year in nearly all types of weather, so make sure you have proper weather gear!  The dogs want to be out no matter wind, snow or sleet just like the postal service!

Our staff will help you choose dogs suited to your handling abilities. Most of our Walkers come after school/work hours but we do have some that are available as early as 1pm, as well.

The Columbus Symphony Orchestra is currently seeking volunteer musicians to join our ensemble! We are especially in need of the following instruments: violin, viola, cello, bass, oboe, english horn, bassoon, french horn, harp, and percussion. Pianists who have an interest in playing with an orchestra can also contact us and we would love to have them join us when we perform music that requires a piano part. We do not require auditions or membership fees for musicians to come and play with us.

We meet for rehearsal most Tuesday evenings from 7-9pm in the band room at Central Middle School (enter through Door 6) and perform five concerts per season (October through June). Rehearsals begin in late August/ early September and end in early June. There is a break during the summer months and in December between our annual Holiday Concert and the New Year holiday. 

The CSO is a volunteer-run non-profit community orchestra whose musicians range from intermediate to advanced in skill. Our musicians range from high school students to retirees. The CSO is a full orchestra, which means we have strings, winds, brass, and percussion who play with us. We perform classical and pops music. Some examples of composers we've played this past season include: George Gershwin, Duke Ellington, Dame Ethel Smyth, Scott Joplin, Samuel Coleridge-Taylor, Johannes Brahms, Igor Stravinksy, W.A. Mozart, and Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky.

Maumee Scout Reservation is located in the middle of the Hoosier National Forest in the northwest corner of Jackson County. Maumee is a rural retreat with limited access to the internet which requires our campers to "unplug" throughout their stay. Maumee provides an outdoor classroom which affords youth the opportunity to get back to being a kid again and enjoying the wonders of nature, all while learning the principles of Scouting.

There are always projects to be completed to keep this 640 acre property meeting the needs of today's campers. Project vary by season and the abilities of our volunteers.

Now in its 5th year, 411 Gallery is growing in popularity and engaging a broad audience. To continue this growth, the Columbus Area Arts Council is expanding the gallery hours to include early evenings and weekends.

Because BCHS offers appropriate comfort to the animals we shelter, we use a lot of linens and bedding- LOTS!!  We do about 15 loads of laundry a day, which means a lot of folding too.

We can use help all the time to keep our laundry duties running smoothly!

We often need help cleaning, feeding and tidying up our fleine housing areas and the cats that live in the shelter.  

This work is quiet and calm normally, but there is a LOT of dust, cat dander and meowing!  A typical shift involves scooping poo, removing soiled bedding, wiping the cages, feeding and setting up a new cozy condo for each cat.   We spot clean during the day to keep the messes away from our shelter cats too.

After the cleaning duties, there is always time for a snuggle or quick play time!

We are open by appointment, but the shelter is a big place and it is helpful to have a volunteer escort patrons to the animal areas where they can meet a potential new pet.

If you like animals and love people who want to adopt them, this could be the position for you!

Family School Partners and Su Casa are co-collaborators in the Afterschool Homework Help program lead by Vecina Irma Cortez. During this program students are provided with homework assistance, creative art projects and prize incentives for their educational and interpersonal growth. We are looking for consistent volunteers who could provide mentorship/tutoring for youth K-4th. The program will be ongoing throughout the school year -On Wednesdays- and will take place at the Terrace Room in the BCSC Building.

BCSC Cultural Learning Center is looking for volunteers who can help with the English Conversation Club program. The purpose of this program is to help a diverse group of adults learn and practice English. It is 1 hour in the morning, once a week through the school year. It is possible for the date and time to be set to accommodate your schedule. The conversation could be held either in person at Columbus North High school or virtually. Volunteers are asked to initiate conversation topics, help to build up topic-related English vocabulary, and facilitate a group of individuals’ conversations/dialogues.

BCSC Cultural Learning Center is looking for volunteers who can help with the Connect to English program. The program aims to provide English learners from Secondary schools with homework assistance. It is 1.5 hours after school, once a week through the school year. It is possible for the date and time to be set to accommodate your schedule. Volunteers are asked to help students work on their homework, including reading, language arts, math, etc. virtually or in-person in the school setting.
